Annealed Glass
What is annealed glass?
- Standard: BS EN 572 for basic soda lime silicate glass.
- Annealed glass is referred to as "basic" glass in all the current BS EN standards. Most other types of architectural glass are produced from annealed glass. Most annealed glass is now produced by the float process.
Advantages of annealed glass
- Annealed glass is the cheapest type of architectural glass and the type on which all others, referred to on this page, are based.
- Annealed glass can be worked, i.e. cut, drilled, or polished, at any time.
Disadvantages of annealed glass
- Annealed glass is not a safety glass. It breaks into large pieces, generally referred to as "shards", with sharp edges.
